Wojciech Tohman: A Champion for Animals During War
Wojciech Lukasz Tohman is visiting our national nature park «Tuzlivski Lymany» for the second time to investigate the impact of the war on wild animals in Ukraine.
In recent years, he has traveled to numerous countries and conflict zones, noting that Ukrainians have shown unprecedented dedication to rescuing animals, saving thousands of both domestic and wild creatures.
His journalism career began during his high school years with the youth weekly «Na przełaj». From 1990 to 2004, he worked as a reporter for «Gazeta Wyborcza». Between 1996 and 2002, he created and hosted the TV program «Has anyone heard, has anyone seen?» on TVP1. In 1999, he founded the ITAKA Foundation, which searches for missing persons and assists their families, and he continues to volunteer there. He has also taught at the Institute of Journalism at Warsaw University.
In recent years, he has written extensively about materials gathered from various conflict zones. His books have been translated into several languages, including English, Arabic, French, and more.
Wojciech donated three of his signed books to our park:
- Wojciech Tohman. "You Ate Like a Stone". trans. from Polish by Andriy Bondar. – Kyiv: «Choven», 2022 (about the war in Bosnia and Herzegovina).
- Wojciech Tohman. "Today We Will Paint Death". trans. from Polish by Andriy Bondar. – Kyiv: «Choven», 2023 (about the genocide in Rwanda).
- Wojciech Tohman. "The Crowing of Roosters, the Howling of Dogs". trans. from Polish by Andriy Bondar. – Kyiv: «Choven», 2024 (about the genocide in Cambodia).
These books are not for the faint-hearted as they reveal the depths of human cruelty, yet they also highlight numerous instances of heroism and humanity.
Currently, Wojciech is completing a book on the impact of the war on animals in Ukraine, focusing on the brave individuals who rescue them in conflict zones.
