Road Safety: Protecting Lives

Traditionally, employees of the Ministry of Internal Affairs service centers in Odesa, Mykolaiv, and Kherson joined the Road Safety Week.
During these challenging times, we must support each other and believe in our victory and protectors.
This year, specialists from the southern regions' service centers have joined a nationwide initiative to remind everyone that visibility on the road saves lives.
Educational meetings for young visitors and their parents took place in our service centers where children learned about road safety rules and received reflective items like reflectors and bracelets to help drivers see pedestrians in low light conditions.

Child safety is in our hands.
Remember a few simple rules:

  • wear bright clothing or reflective elements;
  • get reflectors for your pets;
  • equip your bicycle or scooter with a flashlight.

Reflective elements are a simple but incredibly effective way to save lives.
Statistics show that most pedestrian accidents occur at night. If a pedestrian wears a reflector, the risk of an accident decreases by 6-8 times. We must remain visible even in the darkest times.

Legally, it is also an obligation.
Safety is the main principle that must be adhered to in road traffic. This applies to not only vehicle drivers but all road users. According to official statistics, pedestrian accidents are the most common type of road traffic incidents.
Most pedestrian accidents occur at night or in low visibility conditions. This is why legal norms regarding the wearing of reflective elements have been established. According to the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine resolution No. 1105 dated November 11, 2020, pedestrians are required to use reflective elements at night or wear clothing with such inserts.
A person in dark clothing is visible only from a distance of 25-30 meters, while reflective elements allow a person to be seen from 130-150 meters. Additionally, drivers and passengers will be held responsible for violating the rules regarding the use of reflective vests.

Be visible – save lives.
Reflective elements are your shield in the dark.
Remember: street lighting outages are a challenge not only for the energy system but also for road safety. Following simple recommendations will help safeguard your life and health.
Be visible, be careful, and remember – shining means being safe!
