Art and Safety: The Unveiling of a Mural in Odesa

On September 2, during the City Day celebrations, the new mural «Towards the Dream» was ceremoniously unveiled on the facade of Odesa Lyceum No. 56.

Everyone interprets the mural's meaning differently: for some, it symbolizes a happy childhood; for others, it represents the Odesa sea and the Vorontsov Lighthouse, while others may recall the words of Lina Kostenko: «You don’t need wings to stand on the ground.» For many, it is a symbol of hope for a peaceful future. All these interpretations are valid.

However, one cannot overlook the somber reality of unexploded ordnance scattered along the shore, reminding us of the ongoing danger.

This is why a QR code has been placed on the mural, leading to educational materials on mine safety. Neglecting safety rules can cost lives, and sadly, the statistics bear this out.

During the mural's unveiling, a memorandum of cooperation was signed between Odesa Lyceum No. 56 and the Public Organization «Association of Mine Clearers of Ukraine,» which will enhance work with children in the field of safety and facilitate experience sharing.

The celebration featured performances by first graders and the vocal-choreographic studio «Arcadia».

«This school represents one of our dreams coming to fruition. We remember what the school used to be, and we see how it is gradually changing for the better. We hope that every dream of ours will come true in such a bright and beautiful way. We want our children to live under peaceful skies,» said Elena Buinevich, the director of the Department of Education and Science of the Odesa City Council.

«Today marks our tenth anniversary of openings. We are creating murals all over Ukraine. Today’s unveiling is particularly significant as it coincides with a festive day. Happy City Day to everyone!” said Timur Pistruga, the head of the board of the Public Organization «Association of Mine Clearers of Ukraine.»

The project was implemented by the Public Organization «Association of Mine Clearers of Ukraine» and the Canadian-Ukrainian Foundation.
