A Documentary Film Showcasing the Heroism of Doctors Amid War
This documentary is created with the support of the Ukrainian Cultural Foundation and tells the story of doctors at the National Children's Specialized Hospital "Okhmatdyt" during the full-scale invasion. In March 2022, director Svitlana Rudyuk began filming scenes for "Not as Before" in the hospital, where she was struck by the resilience of the doctors who save lives daily. The filming crew spent weeks alongside the medical staff, sometimes even staying overnight in the hospital, sheltering from bombings.
In July 2024, the hospital once again drew global attention after a tragic event when a Russian missile struck the medical facility. This disaster highlighted the bravery of Ukrainian doctors who, despite sustaining injuries, continued to provide assistance to the wounded.
In 2025, the film crew returned to Okhmatdyt to see how the doctors coped with the aftermath of the attack.
The main characters of the film are Valerii Bovkun, a micro-surgeon, and Alona Bezlehkа, a physical therapist. Valerii expresses his desire to help children, while Alona recalls the feeling of hopelessness that engulfed them in the early days of the war.
Over 1000 minutes of footage were shot, from which a medium-length film "Not as Before" (46 minutes) was edited.
The film is a tribute to the medical professionals who save lives daily. The director emphasized her aim to be a part of their process, offering support during difficult times. Throughout the years, they maintained contact, and each visit to the hospital reminded her that life is no longer as it used to be.
We continue to fight and stay true to ourselves, so that in the future, when we win, we can live with dignity, even if not as before.
The premiere screening of the film is taking place on the Megogo platform. It is available online until September 21.
