Illegal Fishing Incident at Katlabug Lake

In early October, during a patrol, officers from the Izmail district police and the Odessa fish protection patrol uncovered a 63-year-old resident from a nearby village unloading fish caught with illegal nets at Katlabug Lake near the village of Utkonosivka.

This was reported by the police.

Officers arrived at the scene and seized evidence from the offender, including a boat, 150 meters of illegal nets, and 69 fish, including crucian carp, carp, silver carp, bream, and pike. The illegal catch was handed over to a specialized facility for storage pending the investigation.

According to the results of an environmental engineering examination, the damages caused to the state by the offender amounted to nearly 209 thousand hryvnias.

The fisherman did not deny his guilt and explained that he was aware of the prohibition on using illegal nets for fishing but still used them for personal gain.

During the pre-trial investigation, overseen by the Izmail district prosecutor's office, police established all the circumstances of the offense, gathered sufficient evidence, and charged the individual with illegal fishing, causing significant harm. The law enforcement officers sent an indictment to the court under part 1 of Article 249 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine. The maximum penalty prescribed by the sanction is three years of restriction of liberty.
