Reviving the Odessa-Brody Pipeline: New Opportunities for Ukraine
The Hungarian oil company Mol intends to reactivate the Ukrainian Odessa-Brody pipeline, which has been unused for many years. The project's main goal is to reduce dependence on Russian energy sources and ensure alternative oil supplies for Central European countries.
According to Bloomberg, Mol is planning to restore the Odessa-Brody pipeline to lessen reliance on Russian energy imports.
Mol's Vice President, Szabolcs Pala Szabo, stated that the pipeline will allow oil shipments via the Black Sea from various global producers, which can then be transported to Hungary and Serbia through the «Druzhba» system.
However, implementing this project will require significant investment due to the aging infrastructure, and Odessa frequently faces missile attacks. The company is counting on financial and political support from the EU and other nations.
«We want the EU and other countries to participate in the “revival” of the Odessa pipeline, which will also serve as an alternative to Russian oil for Serbia,» the Vice President remarked.
The Odessa-Brody pipeline was built in 2002, stretching 667 km with a capacity of 14.5 million tons of oil per year. It connects the Odesa and Lviv regions, where it joins the international «Druzhba» pipeline.
