Scientists and Animals Relocated from Askania-Nova to Borodinsky Community
Researchers and part of the animal population from the biosphere reserve «Askania-Nova», currently under occupation in the Kherson region, will be relocated to the Borodinsky community in the Bolgrad district.
Discussions are underway to allocate 70 hectares of land within the Borodinsky community for research purposes, where experts from «Askania-Nova» will work. Local residents will also have job opportunities, creating additional employment. This information comes from «Bessarabia INFORM».
The community head, Ivan Kyusse, reported that preliminary meetings have already taken place with the reserve director, Viktor Shapoval.
«We agreed to find an appropriate plot of land to establish a unit that will preserve unique animal species and provide jobs for researchers», – emphasized Ivan Kyusse.
On June 10, the Budzhak village council plans to approve a Memorandum of Cooperation between the Borodinsky community, the biosphere reserve «Askania-Nova», and the NGO «Rewilding Ukraine».
On the same day, the issue of allocating 70 hectares of land for relocation will be considered.
Additional Information
The biosphere reserve «Askania-Nova» named after Friedrich Falz-Fein is the oldest reserve in Ukraine, located in the Kherson region (temporarily occupied since February 24, 2022). It houses the largest wild steppe in Europe.
The local zoo is home to animals from savannas, deserts, steppes, and mountainous regions. Additionally, it hosts rare steppe zone birds: Swainson's pheasant, steppe and grey cranes, steppe eagle, and black vulture. Most of these species are listed in the Red Book of Ukraine, the official list of rare, vulnerable, and endangered species of flora and fauna.
