Winterization of City Fountains: Key Insights
In early October, the Service Center began the winterization of the city's fountains.
The winterization process is quite complex. To ensure the fountains survive the winter, specialists must blow out the water supply systems, remove nozzles, and disassemble electrical and pumping equipment. After disassembly, equipment inspections and repairs are conducted if needed.
Typically, fountains in residential areas are winterized first, followed by those in parks and squares. The fountains in the city center are attended to last.
In recent years, the Service Center has adopted a method of fully sealing certain fountains. This is applied to fountains in the City Garden, Shevchenko Park, and the Cosmonauts Square. Due to the war, four fountains in the UNESCO zone were completely sealed this year.
The process of reopening fountains will commence in spring. Generally, the first fountains in the city center are activated by April 1, with the remainder following in April.
Note
The Service Center oversees 27 city fountains. In 2024, 17 fountains were reopened. They are all outdoors, thus their operation is weather-dependent. A team of 15 staff members ensures their maintenance.
Throughout the spring and summer, regular maintenance is performed: cleaning, trash removal, and water level checks.
Vandalism incidents also occur, requiring unscheduled repairs. The fountain on Krymsky Boulevard suffers the most, with teenagers often disregarding rules.
Despite challenges, the specialists at the Service Center continue their work diligently.
