Blood Donation Initiative at ONU: 160 Donors for 160 Years
Odesa National University named after I. Mechnikov launched the initiative «160 blood donors» to celebrate its 160th anniversary with the support of the «Donor Odesa» project.
The event was organized with the help of university administration and staff unions. Medical professionals from the Odesa Regional Blood Transfusion Station facilitated the mobile donations.
The initiative took place in two phases, with the first phase concluding in spring. The second phase coincided with World Kindness Day celebrated in November. On November 13 and 14, ONU representatives donated blood at two locations: at the Faculty of Hydrometeorology and Ecology and the Department of Health and Safety.
«The donation campaign continued even during the blackout. We used a generator to keep the necessary equipment running. With our blood, we can save the lives of our defenders who bravely protect our independence,» stated Vadim Penov, the initiative's organizer and associate professor at the Department of Physiology.
Thanks to collective efforts, over 170 people donated blood at ONU. Participants included not only students and staff but also their family members who expressed their desire to contribute.
Moreover, ONU students and faculty conducted significant outreach to raise awareness about the importance of blood donation on social media.
Every blood donation can save up to three lives.
Kindness starts with us. Kindness saves lives.
