Revamping Physical Education: A New Approach to Teaching

The Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine has initiated an expert dialogue focused on the modernization of physical education. This event is organized in collaboration with the Small Academy of Sciences, JuniorS, UNIT.City, and the NGO "Education 360". The primary aim is to adapt physical education to the current realities, particularly the challenges posed by war and the pandemic.

Opening the event, Deputy Minister Nadia Kuzmychova emphasized that the outcomes of the discussions would be incorporated into new concepts for the physical education sector, scheduled for publication in spring 2025. The implementation of updated educational content will begin in 2025 across five grades in various educational fields.

The program included two panel discussions. The first, on the topic of “The Mission of Physical Education”, was moderated by Alexander Pedan, who conducted a Q&A session with teachers.

“Physical education is not just about lessons; it's about cultivating healthy habits and a love for movement. Education must recognize each student's individuality,” said Nadia Kuzmychova.

The second discussion focused on “The Graduate Profile: How Should Physical Education Prepare Children for Life in a Changing World?” Participants included:

  • Konstantin Yevtushenko — managing partner of Unit.city;
  • Alexander Sekirin — founder of the dance school “All Stars”;
  • Maria Pavlichuk — co-founder of the NGO “JuniorS”.

Experts highlighted the importance of practical approaches to physical education that equip students with knowledge on staying active, forming lifelong healthy habits, and discovering their passion for physical activity.

After the panel discussions, participants formed groups to work on specific solutions for enhancing physical education and shared their professional experiences.

This educational forum is part of a broader consultation process involving surveys of educators, parents, and students. The Ministry plans to conduct more such meetings, which can be joined through the website educationforlife.mon.gov.ua in the “Who is it for?” section.
