Transition to Winter Time in Ukraine: New Regulations
On the night of October 26, Ukrainians set their clocks back by one hour, marking the transition to winter time. This means that the day is extended by an hour.
The concept of daylight saving and standard time originated in Great Britain in 1908 with the aim of optimizing electricity usage.
In Ukraine, the clock changes occur on the last Sundays of October and March respectively.
This procedure is governed by the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine's resolution from May 13, 1996, No. 509.
On July 16, 2024, the Verkhovna Rada adopted a law on time calculation that abolishes the transition to winter and summer time. According to this law, a single Kyiv time - UTC+2 - is to be established in Ukraine. Therefore, in October 2024, Ukrainians will set their clocks back for the last time, and from 2025, the daylight saving time transition will no longer be implemented. However, President Volodymyr Zelensky has yet to sign this law.
