Reviving Historical Names: Renaming in Odesa Region

The Ukrainian Parliament has made a significant decision supporting a local initiative to rename two localities in the Argyz community in the Odesa region – the settlement of Novokholmsk and the village of Kholmsk.

On May 5, a new draft resolution titled “On the Renaming of Certain Localities” was registered in the Ukrainian Parliament, indicating the intention to rename nineteen geographical objects in Ukraine, including two in the Odesa region.

The document states that both proposals were submitted by the Argyz City Council.

The renaming of the village of Kholmsk was initiated by its residents, who wish to restore its historical name, Selioglo, which was used from its founding until the Soviet renaming in 1946.

The settlement of Novokholmsk is planned to be renamed to Aliyagu. This decision was supported by local residents during public hearings, explaining their choice by the fact that previously there was a railway station nearby with the same name.
