The damages caused by the man are preliminarily estimated at over 650 thousand hryvnias. The offender faces up to three years of restriction of liberty.
This morning, during a joint patrol near the village of Kalagliya, employees of the Water Police Sector of the Odesa District Police Department No. 2, along with border guards, discovered a 24-year-old resident of the Ovidiopol community, who was extracting prohibited fishing gear and illegal catch from the water. The man did not have any permits for fishing.
The investigative group summoned to the scene seized from the offender as material evidence a fishing suit, two gill nets with a total length of 200 meters, and 287 fish weighing a total of 180 kilograms, including: herring, carp, bream, crucian carp, perch, taranka, flatfish, and asp. During the preliminary investigation, law enforcement officers transferred everything to storage at a specialized enterprise.
According to preliminary estimates by specialists, the illegal actions of the fisherman caused damages to the state amounting to more than 650 thousand hryvnias.
In connection with this incident, investigators from the territorial police department registered information in the Unified Register of Pre-Trial Investigations under Part 1 of Article 249 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine. This concerns illegal fishing activities that caused significant harm. As part of the proceedings, a judicial-ecological examination has been appointed, which will determine the exact amount of damage caused to the state. After conducting necessary investigative actions and receiving the expert conclusion, a decision will be made regarding the notification of the suspect. He faces up to three years of restriction of liberty.
The investigation is ongoing under the procedural guidance of the Black Sea District Prosecutor's Office.
Police urge citizens to be responsible, comply with current legislation, and protect nature.
We remind you that starting in April, an annual spring-summer spawning ban on the catch of aquatic bioresources has been imposed in the water bodies of Odesa region. In the Dniester Liman with its floodplains, this ban will be in effect until July 31 (the ban does not apply to specialized herring fishing).
