Barrier-Free Odessa: New Initiatives for Inclusion
During the recent session of the Odessa City Council, deputies voted in favor of new changes to the "Equality" program, renaming it to "Barrier-Free Odessa".
Among the key updates is the plan to open a beach for people with disabilities at the 11th station of the Great Fountain this year.
Odessa Mayor Gennady Trukhanov stated that the preliminary cost of the capital works is estimated at 21.3 million UAH. Funds were allocated on February 5 for the development of project documentation, which will provide a more accurate figure.
The last renovations at the beach took place in 2019. The aggressive marine environment has taken its toll, necessitating repairs to ramps, stairs to the beach, and a new deck. The medical point and restroom will also be renovated, including upgrades to the sewage system.
"Our resort city is currently the only one that provides conditions for marine rehabilitation for people with limited mobility, including our veterans who have lost limbs in the war and children with disabilities," said Gennady Trukhanov.
The mayor also reminded that plans are in place to implement an inclusive sports playground at the "Dolphin" beach before the new health season. This decision has been approved by the Executive Committee.
Additionally, the mayor noted that the municipality intends to establish a powerful rehabilitation base in southern Ukraine. As part of the program, equipment worth over 20 million UAH will be purchased for rehabilitation departments in hospitals and 1.2 million UAH for the arrangement of inclusive wards in other healthcare facilities.
Another point in the program suggests expanding the capabilities of the city’s "Social Taxi" service for transporting individuals with mobility impairments.
