New Standards for Air Quality Monitoring in Ukraine

Ukraine has established new guidelines for informing the public about air quality. This document outlines the list of pollutants and their concentrations for assessing air quality.

The relevant order (No. 590 dated March 24, 2025) has been registered with the Ministry of Justice of Ukraine, as reported by the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Natural Resources.

“This is an important step towards ensuring public access to information about air quality in Ukraine in a user-friendly format,” the ministry stated.

The document includes:

  • a list of pollutants for determining the quality index;
  • concentration levels of these substances;
  • color-coded and textual indicators of the index;
  • recommendations for the public.

The air quality index for any pollutant can be classified as:

  • “Very Poor”;
  • “Poor”;
  • “Unsatisfactory”;
  • “Satisfactory”;
  • “Acceptable”;
  • “Good”.

“The concentration ranges for the quality index are based on regulatory values for each pollutant, considering WHO recommendations on air quality and European quality standards.

This procedure has been developed in line with the European air quality index published on the official website of the European Environment Agency,” the Ministry of Environmental Protection explained.

It is worth noting that throughout February, Kyiv experienced systematic deterioration in air quality. Residents were advised to stay indoors and keep windows closed.

Later, it became known that the accumulation of pollutants in the air was exacerbated by weather conditions, particularly the lack of precipitation and low wind speed.
