Legal Action Against Municipal Director for Landfill Fires

The director of a municipal enterprise has become the subject of a criminal case due to repeated incidents of waste self-ignition and significant fires that occurred two years ago. Firefighters took over a week to extinguish the blazes. He faces up to five years in prison, according to police reports.

Investigators found that the director was responsible for maintaining the landfill, but he disregarded operational regulations. Specifically, he failed to implement a system for collecting and neutralizing the biogas generated from waste decomposition and did not provide security for the landfill.

This negligence led to multiple instances of waste self-ignition, resulting in extensive fires that took more than a week to control. According to estimates, the environmental damage from air pollution exceeded 4.75 million UAH.

"After gathering sufficient evidence, investigators charged the director under two articles of the Criminal Code of Ukraine: negligence (part 2 of Article 367) and air pollution (part 2 of Article 241)" - stated Andriy Donets, head of the Odesa District Police Department No. 2.

«For these offenses, the accused faces imprisonment for up to five years and a ban on holding certain positions for up to three years. The pre-trial investigation has been completed, and the indictment has been sent to court», - added police colonel Andriy Donets.
