Creating an Accessible Environment for All: New Initiatives in Odesa
More and more individuals on wheelchairs can be seen on the streets, affected by injuries from the ongoing war. Unfortunately, the number of such people increases daily due to Russian attacks. This highlights the urgent need for an accessible environment where everyone can feel comfortable, regardless of their health status.
Odesa has become a leader in inclusivity: in 2025, Mayor Hennadiy Trukhanov declared it the Year of Accessibility in the city. Thus, the plans for this year are extensive and cover all aspects of life.
The driving force behind these initiatives is the Accessibility Council, established at the end of last year. This advisory body brings together representatives from municipal structures, public and veteran organizations to collaborate on developing an accessible space.
According to Hennadiy Trukhanov, who leads the Council, accessibility is not just about physical access; it is also the philosophy of a city where everyone has equal opportunities.
The Council operates expert groups focused on various areas; a City Accessibility Strategy for 2025-2026 has been adopted, synchronized with the National Strategy, outlining key priorities for the upcoming years. Regular inspections of infrastructure and locations are conducted, where veterans and people with disabilities provide their recommendations.
«The priorities of our work are defined by people with disabilities, as they best understand the needs and challenges they face daily. Therefore, it is a collaborative effort covering infrastructure, transport, digitalization, social services, education, and rehabilitation,» emphasized Oleksiy Morozov, Deputy Head of the Council and leader of the NGO «Barrier-Free».
He stated that the main goal of the Council is to consolidate the efforts of the government, veterans, the public, and businesses around accessibility as one of the critical tasks of our time.
