New Energy Supply Opportunities for Odessa

Odessa has launched the first phase of the distributed generation system based on gas piston cogeneration units within the city.

This project is being implemented in collaboration with the UNDP team and representatives from the embassies of Japan, Norway, and Sweden as part of the decentralization of the city's energy system.

The first cogeneration unit has already been installed at one of the Odessa boiler houses. As noted by Odessa's Deputy Mayor Hanna Pozdnyakova, cogeneration units are extremely important for the heating sector due to their independence from central energy supply, high energy efficiency, and rapid adaptability and recovery. They can start up quickly, allowing for the prompt restoration of heat supply to homes.

At the ceremony for the transfer of the gas piston power plant to the balance of the municipal enterprise "City Heat Supply of Odessa," attendees included: UNDP Resident Representative in Ukraine Mr. Yako Silje, Deputy Head of the Norwegian Embassy mission in Ukraine Mr. Jan Flete, Japanese Ambassador to Ukraine Mr. Masashi Nakagome (via video address), Swedish Ambassador to Ukraine Mr. Martin Oberg, Deputy Minister of Energy of Ukraine Mykola Kolysnyk (via video address), and head of UNDP's Green Energy Recovery Program Yulia Rybak.

«I am especially grateful to our partners in Yokohama, with whom I signed a Memorandum in March 2023, which allowed Odessa to receive the necessary equipment. Thanks to the support of Japan, Norway, and Sweden, we have not only installed the first unit but also prepared sites for the next ones. From now on, we will be able to supply electricity to heating, water supply, and sewage facilities», - noted Gennady Trukhanov.

This project will help Odessa become more resilient to energy challenges faced by its residents, particularly during previous blackouts.

By the end of the year, the delivery of two more such machines is expected. All preparatory work for their installation at the sites has been completed.
