Odesa and Varna: Strengthening Ties and Cultural Exchange

Odesa's Mayor Gennady Trukhanov held a meeting with Christo Vidolov Christov, the mayor of the Mladost district in Varna.

This gathering was facilitated by Odesa's Ambassador in Bulgaria, Mr. Mark Petrov. Odesa and Varna share a rich history, including ancient ties when a Greek settlement called Odessos existed in the area of modern Varna.

“We share many commonalities that shape our relationship and open up new opportunities for development. Varna is a coastal city that welcomed many residents from Odesa during the war, most of whom integrated into the local community while preserving our Odesa charm,” noted Mr. Christov.

Gennady Trukhanov also announced that the Days of Bulgarian Culture are scheduled to take place in Odesa at the end of October and the beginning of November, supported by the General Consulate.

The Mayor of Odesa invited his Bulgarian counterpart to participate in these events and suggested discussing future collaborative initiatives. The meeting also addressed recent natural disasters affecting both Odesa and Bulgarian cities.

As reported by Mr. Christov, the heavy rainfall in Bulgaria on October 3 resulted in six confirmed fatalities, with fears that the number may rise to ten. Odesa experienced a severe downpour on September 30, leading to loss of life as well. This experience serves as a painful reminder of the vulnerability of our cities and the importance of international cooperation in preventing and responding to climatic challenges.
