Monitoring the Black Sea: New Investigations

Environmental agencies are actively monitoring the condition of the Black Sea in Odessa, particularly around Mayachny Lane. Early in 2025, they received numerous complaints from residents of the 16th station of the Great Fountain regarding possible sewage contamination in the water.

This information was shared by the press service of the State Environmental Inspection of the Southwestern District.

In response to the situation, a series of measures were initiated, including commission inspections involving community members, local authorities, and inspections of the shoreline along with water sample collection near the piers. Preliminary analyses indicated no exceedance of maximum permissible concentrations. However, due to a lack of technical support, it was impossible to collect samples directly in the water for a long period. With the assistance of the Municipal Rescue and Diving Service of the Odessa City Council, inspectors were able to go out to sea and collect new samples approximately 100 meters from the shore, near the deepwater discharge of stormwater collectors. Additional results from laboratory studies will be released after the analysis is completed.
