The Black Sea: Causes of Pollution and Algal Blooms
What causes the algal blooms in the Black Sea? Inspections are being conducted to analyze pollutants in the water.
This information was provided by the State Environmental Inspection of the Southwestern Region.
In recent weeks, the coast of Odessa has been suffering from a massive accumulation of algae – waves are washing them ashore, and the water is taking on unnatural green, yellow, or brown hues.
This is typically a seasonal phenomenon associated with rising water temperatures, but an excess of pollutants in the sea may also trigger the "blooming" of the water.
To clarify the situation, state inspectors from the Southwestern Region have taken samples of seawater within the city of Odessa – particularly in areas where algae form a thick layer on the surface. The research is ongoing. The results of the laboratory analysis will be published upon completion.
