Environmental Violation in Odesa: Ray Fishing Incident

In the Odesa region, near the Sasyk estuary and the Danube Biosphere Reserve, ecologists have uncovered a case of poaching: a group of men caught 30 thornback rays (Dasyatis pastinaca) in just a few hours using illegal gear (spin rods), which far exceeds the allowable limit of 3 kg per person.

This information was shared on Facebook by Ivan Rusev, head of the research department of the "Tuzla Limans" National Park.

"Recently, there have been many rays in the coastal zone of the Black Sea, where they feed on crabs. The population of marine cats has rebounded during the war, when a ban on commercial fishing was enacted," the scientist wrote.

The offenders were educated about the regulations and law enforcement was called.

Live rays were released back into their natural habitat — the sea.
