Remarkable Beetle: New Insights on the Stag Beetle
This species is regarded as the largest beetle in Europe.
In the Memorial Park «Heroic Defense of Odessa – 411 Battery», a stag beetle (Lucanus cervus) was discovered — a rare insect listed in the Red Book of Ukraine.
This information was provided by the press service of the State Ecological Inspection of the Southwestern District.
This species is considered the largest beetle in Europe: males can reach up to 8 cm in length, and their large antler-like jaws make them easily recognizable. Despite their fierce appearance, stag beetles pose no threat to humans.
In nature, these beetles play a vital ecological role — they assist in decomposing wood, contributing to the renewal of forest ecosystems. Their presence in large parks, especially those retaining elements of natural woodlands, indicates biological balance and stability of the environment.
The stag beetle is protected by Ukrainian legislation, and its destruction, capture, or removal from the wild is strictly prohibited.
If you encounter this rare species:
- Do not disturb the insect or handle it;
- Do not attempt to move or take it — allow it to continue its natural life cycle.
Preserving biodiversity is not just about protecting wildlife but also about harmonious coexistence between humans and nature. Every encounter with a rare species is further confirmation that conservation efforts yield real results.
