Discovery of Rare Ducks in National Park

In the Tuzly Lagoons National Park in the Odesa region, seven broods of the rare gray duck gadwall, listed in Ukraine's Red Book, have been observed. This may indicate favorable conditions for the reproduction of this species. This information was shared by park employee Ivan Rusev.

Key Points:

  • The national park recorded seven pairs of gadwalls with ducklings
  • This species is protected and listed in the Red Book of Ukraine

Why Birds Chose the Odesa Region

Seven pairs of gadwalls (Anas strepera) with ducklings were spotted in the wetlands and dense reeds of the area known as «Tuzly Amazon» within the national park. This species of waterfowl from the duck family is rare in Ukraine and is under protection.

Experts from the national park emphasize that gadwalls are particularly cautious birds. They are nearly impossible to photograph: in case of danger, the female hides, and the ducklings scatter quickly into the reeds. This complicates observation but also confirms that the area remains safe for breeding.

The presence of gadwall broods highlights the crucial role of the Tuzly Lagoons in biodiversity conservation. According to park staff, these wetlands are among the most valuable in Ukraine, particularly given the increasing impacts of climate change and human activity.
