Red Water in Magalevsky Liman Due to Algal Bloom

In the national park «Tuzlivski Limany» located in the Odesa region, the water in the Magalevsky Liman has taken on a red hue due to the blooming of algae.

This was reported by ecologist Ivan Rusev from the national park.

According to him, after the natural closure of the strait at a distance of 2 km of sandy spit, due to intense evaporation, the liman has almost dried up. Salt formation is beginning on its surface.

In recent days, the aquatic ecosystem of the liman has gradually taken on a red color. The peak of this phenomenon is expected by mid-September, resembling a landscape from a distant planet. This color serves as an indicator of mass «blooming» of the green microalgae Dunaliella Salina during high temperatures and salinity, – Rusev noted.

Rusev also added that the Magalevsky Liman is the sixth of 13 shallow limans that are actively drying up and where salt formation will occur. Despite this trend, the waters of the other 7 limans remain large and provide food for birds and hydrobionts.
