Inauguration of the Memorial for Ukrainian Scouts
A solemn ceremony took place in Kyiv to unveil a Memorial dedicated to Ukrainian scouts. This composition honors the memory of those who served in the Main Intelligence Directorate and foreign volunteers who lost their lives for Ukraine's freedom.
At the center of the Memorial is the word Aeternitas (Latin for “Eternity”), reflecting the international nature of the struggle: alongside Ukrainians, volunteers from over 50 countries serve in the intelligence units.
Two steles symbolize wings and shields, with their active relief conveying movement and resilience. A space of silence between the steles bears the names of scouts who perished in the fight for Ukraine.
Viewed from above, the structure resembles an owl’s eye — a symbol of vigilance and protection.
The Memorial was consecrated by His Beatitude Metropolitan Epifaniy.
“Each fallen scout made the ultimate sacrifice — giving their life for others. This is not just a military act but a spiritual one. Remember: the Lord is present where people are ready to sacrifice for others. This Memorial is a symbol of that sacrificial love and indomitable spirit,” Metropolitan Epifaniy stated.
The author of the Memorial is the renowned sculptor Nazar Bilyk, who shared the inspiration behind his work.
“This memorial is about dignity and a silent dialogue. We aimed to create a space that feels the presence of those who will not return,” Bilyk noted.
The memory of the fallen scouts was honored with a moment of silence and a military salute. Lieutenant General Kyrylo Budanov, along with military personnel and families of the fallen, laid flowers at the Memorial.
“Many of our scouts returned on shields, but their deeds will live on in the memory of the nation. They will serve as a guiding light for future generations: ‘Aut cum scuto, aut in scuto — either with a shield or on a shield!’” emphasized Budanov.
The general expressed gratitude to the creators of the Memorial and to the patrons, Volodymyr and Olena Besaga, for their joint efforts that brought this space into existence.
Sergey Chub, the father of a posthumous Hero of Ukraine, Lieutenant Oleksandr Chub, who died in the battles for Sievierodonetsk, reminded the audience of the price of freedom that Ukrainians pay daily.
The Memorial will serve as a place to honor the fallen scouts and be an integral part of the military rituals of the Main Intelligence Directorate.
Eternal memory and glory to the military scouts!
Glory to Ukraine!
