Rare Discovery: The Giant Silk Moth in Odesa Region

A unique night moth, the Giant Silk Moth, has been documented in the northern Odesa region. This species is the largest moth in Europe, boasting a wingspan of up to 15 centimeters.

The South-Western Environmental Inspectorate announced this discovery via Telegram. They observed the Giant Silk Moth (Saturnia pyri) near the village of Bashtankiv in the Podilsky district, also known as the pear-eyed moth.

This moth captivates with its size and beauty. Its wings are adorned with distinctive 'eyes', which gave rise to its common name. During the day, the Giant Silk Moth hides, while at night it displays its grandeur to onlookers.
