The Odesa National Academic Theater of Opera and Ballet has unveiled a fresh rendition of the opera «Zaporozhets beyond the Danube», showcasing a contemporary approach to direction, costume design, and choreography devoid of ethnic clichés.
Details of the new production
This production features minimalist sets and modern lighting solutions. Interactive video projections transport the audience from the villages of the late 18th century into the present day.
The new costume collection merges traditional Ukrainian attire elements with avant-garde silhouettes. Designers have moved away from the typical trousers and embroidered shirts, creating sleek costumes that reflect the spirit of the Cossack era through a modern lens.
The choreography maintains the energy of folk dances while discarding clichés and stereotypical movements. An original dance style has been employed, blending elements of contemporary ballet and ethnic plastic art, emphasizing the patriotic themes of the opera.
The project's goal is to convey the history of the Cossacks and their struggle for freedom to contemporary audiences while preserving the authenticity of the original. The production appeals to the values of independence and courage, highlighting the relevance of these themes today.
