Reviving the Spirit of 'Shchedryk' in Odesa

A significant cultural event took place in Odesa — during a Christmas concert, a unique rendition of 'Shchedryk' was presented by local choir groups. The audience also witnessed the premiere of a music video created under wartime conditions.

'Shchedryk' is a world-renowned composition by Ukrainian composer Mykola Leontovych, symbolizing Ukrainian musical culture. This time, the piece was performed in a new format, a collaboration among Odesa's choirs and musicians.

The project idea originated in Odesa's music schools, where choir groups came together to reinterpret this famous piece, aiming to showcase a vibrant contemporary Odesa.

Filming for the music video took place under challenging conditions — during brief breaks between air raid alerts, symbolizing the resilience and unity of the cultural community.

Olha Lozova, Deputy Head of Odesa's Military Administration, emphasized the project's significance:

“Initiatives like this are not just about art. They represent our identity, our ability to make Odesa resonate even in tough times. 'Shchedryk' as performed by Odesans is the city's voice heard around the world.”

Project coordinator Olena Pavlova noted that the main goal was to preserve authenticity and emotion:

“We wanted Odesa to sound modern and fresh. In every note — Odesa, in every voice — our unity and faith in culture as a unifying force.”

This project exemplifies how culture continues to thrive and evolve even in wartime, shaping a contemporary image of Odesa on the cultural map of Ukraine and the world.
