Arrest of Fraudster Promising Military Service Exemption

The perpetrator was apprehended immediately after attempting to defraud a conscript. To achieve his goal, he manipulated the victim's trust. The court will decide his fate.

Operatives from the Odessa Department of Internal Security of the National Police, in collaboration with investigators from the Regional Police, uncovered a 33-year-old resident of Odessa engaged in illegal activities. This was not his first offense.

Despite having a prior conviction for fraud and current charges of abuse of influence, the fraudster chose to persist in his criminal activities. He offered a man, who had documents for deferral until February 2026, to be removed from military registration due to health reasons for $15,000.

To add credibility, he posed as a lawyer and claimed to have connections with officials at the local Territorial Recruitment Center.

To prevent the man from backing out, the fraudster resorted to intimidation, threatening to cancel the deferral and put him on a wanted list. At the same time, to expedite the payment, he informed the victim that this was the only opportunity to finalize the deal for at least six months.

Immediately after receiving the money, the operatives and investigators arrested the scammer under Article 208 of the Criminal Procedure Code of Ukraine. He has already been charged under part 3 of Article 369-2 (Abuse of Influence) of the Criminal Code, which carries a penalty of up to 8 years in prison.

The Odessa Regional Prosecutor's Office is overseeing the proceedings.
