New Regulations for the Accounting of Genetically Modified Organisms

The Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine has approved new regulations for maintaining a registry of genetically modified organisms, aimed at improving consumer safety.

This was reported by the press service of the Ministry of Agrarian Policy and Food.

The updated registry will serve as a unified state platform for recording, monitoring, and storing data about all GMOs registered in Ukraine.

The ministry explained that the implementation of such a registry is a necessary step to ensure transparency in the field of biotechnology, enhance consumer safety, and fulfill Ukraine's commitments under the Association Agreement with the EU.

Furthermore, the decree harmonizes Ukrainian legislation with EU regulations regarding GMO management, particularly Directive 2001/18/EC on the deliberate release of genetically modified organisms into the environment and Commission Decision 2004/204/EC regarding the operation of registers for recording information on GMOs.

This will establish a regulated accounting and control system for GMOs similar to the European one, which enables the reduction of negative impacts and risks to human health and the environment.

The decree will come into force in September 2026, simultaneously with new legislation regulating genetic engineering activities in Ukraine.
