Odessa Father Faces Trial for Child Abuse
A 27-year-old man is facing trial in Odessa for systematically abusing his children – a two-month-old daughter and a two-year-old son.
In one incident, the father inflicted bodily harm of varying severity on them. He faces potential imprisonment.
This was reported by the Main Department of the National Police in the Odessa region.
According to law enforcement, the incident occurred in October 2024. It was established that the 27-year-old father had been hitting his daughter every time she cried for two months, attempting to "calm" the infant in this manner.
When the child's condition deteriorated, her 24-year-old mother called for an ambulance. According to the woman, she "feared intervening with her husband."
The girl was hospitalized with head and body injuries in the intensive care unit of the Odessa Regional Children's Clinical Hospital.
"The couple had not previously come to the attention of the police or child services. In addition to their daughter, they have a two-year-old son, who, according to preliminary reports, was also abused. The boy is being examined by doctors, and he is preliminarily diagnosed with a closed femur fracture," the police reported.
A forensic medical examination revealed that the children had sustained bodily injuries of varying severity. Specifically, the boy was diagnosed with a closed femoral fracture, abrasions, and bruises, while his sister suffered multiple bruises, closed rib fractures, lung injuries, and brain contusions, which resulted in swelling and coma.
The children were removed from the family and placed in a state-run children's facility.
The 27-year-old father was notified of the suspicion under part 1 of Article 121 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (intentional infliction of serious bodily injury to a child).
Investigators initiated another proceeding under part 1 of Article 122 of the Criminal Code for causing medium severity bodily injuries to the boy.
The suspect was remanded in custody without the right to bail.
The indictment against the man has been sent to court. He remains in custody. He faces up to eight years in prison for his actions.
Additionally, law enforcement has allocated materials regarding the parents to a separate proceeding under Article 166 of the Criminal Code (gross neglect of parental duties). The sanction of the article provides for imprisonment of up to five years.
Earlier, we reported on a case in Prykarpattia where a 41-year-old woman was tried for throwing her newborn child into a well.
