Debate on the Statue of Lesya Ukrainka in Odesa
In Odesa, a lively debate is ongoing about the location of a statue dedicated to Lesya Ukrainka. City council members are currently considering placing it in Cosmonauts Park, which is to be named in honor of the poetess.
It is worth noting that the decision to erect a monument was approved by the culture, tourism, and international relations committee back in spring. Various locations were proposed, including Cosmonauts Park, Heroes Avenue (formerly Oleksandrivskyi), and Shevchenko Park.
Members of the historical and toponymic commission reported to city council members that the proposed site for the statue in Shevchenko Park was unsuitable due to the nearby underground toilet and a café that is being constructed nearby.
“The location in Shevchenko Park is not ideal. A site near the Lanzheron arch was suggested. There are both positive and negative aspects. An underground toilet was there, which has been purchased, and a café is planned for that spot. It remains unclear how convenient it will be to have a café next to the monument,” reported a member of the commission.
Thus, city representatives are currently planning to install the statue in Cosmonauts Park, close to the newly constructed Orthodox Church of Ukraine, which will be built on the site of an existing structure.
