WhatsApp Introduces Enhanced Security Features for Journalists

WhatsApp is introducing new security measures designed to assist journalists and other public figures who may be targeted by cyber attacks.

The new feature, named "Enhanced Account Protection," enables additional privacy and security settings alongside end-to-end encryption. It includes the following options:

  • Account Security: two-step verification is enabled, security notifications are activated, and end-to-end encrypted backups are recommended for users with backups.
  • Messaging and Media: attachments and media from unknown senders will be blocked, and link previews are disabled.
  • Calls: calls from unknown numbers are hidden, and your IP address is concealed during calls.
  • Profile and Online Status: your last seen time, profile picture, and online status are hidden from users except for your contacts or a predefined list of people.
  • Groups: only known contacts or a predefined list of individuals can add you to groups.

These new security features in WhatsApp can be activated in the app on iOS, Android, and Mac, and each can be turned on individually in the "Privacy" section of settings.
