On Monday morning, October 20, numerous prominent applications and websites abruptly malfunctioned. According to Independent, this includes Snapchat, Roblox, Fortnite, Duolingo, and Canva.
The issues began around 10 AM Kyiv time, which is midnight Pacific Time.
These disruptions are likely linked to a failure in Amazon Web Services (AWS), which provides the infrastructure that supports a significant portion of the modern Internet.
The company has already reported «an increase in errors» and delays with «several AWS services».
Amazon Web Services offers numerous services for renting computers and servers that companies use to run their applications and websites.
Thus, any issues within AWS can rapidly impact a substantial part of the Internet, causing failures for websites that may have no direct connection to Amazon.
Currently, it is the largest provider of such «cloud» services globally.
Last year, the company earned $108 billion, which constitutes a significant portion of Amazon's profits.
AWS has stated that they are still investigating the root causes of the issues.
«Engineers were immediately engaged and are actively working both on resolving the issue and fully understanding its underlying cause,» the company said in their latest update.
