Enhancing Meteorological Forecasting in Odesa
The Mayor of Odesa, Gennady Trukhanov, held a significant meeting with Viktor Sitov, the director of the Hydrometeorological Center of the Black and Azov Seas.
During the dialogue, the parties examined crucial aspects of emergency situations, forecasting methods, and the potential for improved collaboration between meteorological services and local authorities.
As Viktor Sitov noted, the Center currently operates 12 weather stations, of which four are marine. However, the existing equipment does not provide sufficient detail: for instance, the stations can detect cloud cover but are unable to accurately predict the amount of precipitation.
According to the director of the Hydrometeorological Center, the southern region, especially coastal cities, requires more precise data that modern locators can provide, similar to those already installed in Lviv and the Kyiv region at state expense.
“Finnish equipment has a range of up to 300 km. It could cover the entire southern region, extending to Vinnytsia. We have already reported this need to the central authorities. Such equipment is costly but extremely necessary. It would allow for accurate determination of precipitation volume, localization, and possibly even help prevent tragedies,” emphasized the director of the Hydrometeorological Center.
Following the meeting, the mayor of Odesa instructed relevant deputies to collaborate with the Hydrometeorological Center to prepare a technical specification and rationale for the installation of such a locator in Odesa.
Additionally, the mayor plans to reach out to sister cities to seek support for this initiative aimed at enhancing the safety of our city's residents.
“It is crucial for us that weather forecasts are as complete and accurate as possible, as this information is not just for awareness, but forms the basis for our operational response plans,” stressed Gennady Trukhanov.
