Prisoner Exchange: Importance and Challenges
During a press conference in Washington after talks at the White House, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky emphasized that the exchange of military and civilian prisoners must be an essential part of the negotiation process.
Zelensky stated at the briefing: "The First Lady and the team from the United States understand the need to engage in the important and painful issue of returning Ukrainian children." "I discussed this with the US president, who agrees that the exchange system is complex, but he will assist me regarding the exchange of all for all. This involves not just military prisoners but also civilians, including journalists and political prisoners. We agreed to work on this" - highlighted Zelensky.
It is worth noting that earlier, Trump declared that a potential prisoner exchange could occur after a trilateral meeting between the USA, Ukraine, and Russia. He claimed that Russia would accept security guarantees for Ukraine, but currently, partners need to discuss, "who will do what, essentially."
