Swallows of Odesa: Nesting and Their Stories

In the Odesa region, within the National Nature Park "Tuzlivski Limany", 11 new nests built by rural swallows have been discovered this year. Researchers observed the birds and recorded 35 chicks throughout the season.

This was reported by Ivan Rusev, the head of the research department of the NPP "Tuzlivski Limany".

One pair of swallows managed to raise a second brood, building a new nest on the spine of a dolphin that died during the war. "This spine, along with other dolphin skulls found along the Black Sea coast, serves as a reminder of the brutal war of Russia against Ukraine, where thousands of dolphins and azovkas perished in the battle for the Black Sea," said Ivan Rusev. The chicks will grow ready for flight by around August 15, and in September they will migrate to warm Africa alongside the adults.
