Creating Inclusive Education: The New Accessibility Strategy
The contemporary world is actively moving towards forming a society where every individual, regardless of their physical or mental characteristics, can freely realize their potential. One of the crucial elements of this development is ensuring accessibility in education.
For individuals with special educational needs, this is not just an important factor but a fundamental requirement for obtaining quality and accessible education. Accessibility in education involves creating conditions that allow people with disabilities or other special needs to feel free and unrestricted in accessing knowledge.
As part of the implementation of the 'Equality' program for 2023-2025, soon to be renamed 'Barrier-Free Odessa', several initiatives are underway:
- installation of ramps;
- major renovation of restrooms in educational institutions in Odessa to meet the needs of individuals with disabilities;
- providing preschool and general education institutions with Wi-Fi access;
- ensuring high-speed internet and computer equipment (to facilitate distance learning for vulnerable students and teachers);
- training medical and educational staff in first aid for students with special educational needs (including epilepsy and other conditions);
- organizing informational events for educators and parents to foster a positive climate in educational institutions serving children with special needs.
