New Inclusive Train Car for Passengers
The new train car can be reserved as needed, and in the absence of special requests, the compartments will operate under standard conditions.
Ukrzaliznytsia has completed the modernization of its first experimental passenger car, fully adapted for transporting individuals in wheelchairs.
This is a compartment car, but instead of 4 sleeping spots, there are 6 in each compartment. The space is organized so that two passengers in wheelchairs and two attendants can comfortably fit. If there is no need for inclusive seating during the journey, 6 people can travel in the compartment.
Key features of the car include:
- Electric lift with a capacity of up to 300 kg;
- Wider doors and corridors for easy movement;
- Braille navigation and contrasting signage;
- Spacious restroom with shower, SOS button, crutch holder, changing table, and child seat;
- Restroom occupancy indicator;
- Individual USB and Type-C sockets;
- Seats with adjustable backrest angles;
- Separate lighting control in the compartment and by each seat;
- Video surveillance in specific areas of the car.
The car was created at the production facilities of the car depot in Bakhmach. All work was completed in three months and carried out by the company’s specialists.
Before modernization, the Ukrzaliznytsia team held consultations with organizations that specialize in assisting persons with disabilities. This allowed them to address real user needs and create a car that meets modern inclusivity standards.
This car is part of Ukrzaliznytsia's ongoing efforts to implement barrier-free solutions in railway transportation. The company is consistently working to ensure accessibility for both rolling stock and station infrastructure for people with reduced mobility, including improvements in platform access, navigation, support services, and online bookings.
Ukrzaliznytsia emphasizes that this car is just the first step in a larger program aimed at creating a barrier-free environment in railways. The company plans to expand similar solutions to make travel comfortable and accessible for all categories of passengers.
