Update on Street Renaming in Ukraine

The civic organization «Decolonization. Ukraine» has provided updated information about the number of streets that need renaming across Ukraine as part of the decommunization and decolonization efforts. The list includes 228 streets in the Odesa region.

The Odesa region ranks fifth among Ukrainian regions in terms of the number of streets requiring renaming. Leading the list is the Zaporizhia region, where 1001 streets need to be decolonized.

«This list is not exhaustive, as there are streets named after local communist figures that many have never heard of», – the organization noted, adding that the map will be updated as new information becomes available.

It is worth mentioning that in some regions, such as Ivano-Frankivsk and Lviv, activists believe that the renaming process is already complete.

The YouTube channel «Odesa Life» has launched a new video series called «Streets of Odesa: Then – Now», which tells the stories of the individuals whose names are carried by the streets of Odesa and the surrounding region.

Previously, the project «Decolonization. Ukraine» published a map of monuments and plaques dedicated to Pushkin that have yet to be dismantled. According to their estimates, the highest number is found in Odesa. Additionally, there have been proposals to rename Mark Twain Park in Odesa.
