Exploring Forensics: An Educational Experience for Students
Forensic specialists from the Odesa District Police Department No. 1 held an engaging educational event for students at a local school, where they learned how police solve crimes and even took part in a «investigation».
The experts explained that a forensic expert’s work begins with a thorough examination of the crime scene. The ability to notice small details is crucial for uncovering traces of a crime. The police demonstrated how to use specialized kits stored in forensic suitcases.
«Inside these suitcases are dozens of tools, each designed for a specific purpose. For example, fingerprint kits help identify who may have touched certain objects. Powders and brushes make these prints visible, which can then be transferred to special film. Ultraviolet lamps help find traces invisible to the naked eye, such as drops of biological fluids or residues of substances. Magnifying glasses and tweezers are needed for carefully collecting small evidence like hair, fabric fibers, or glass fragments. Special bags ensure the proper storage of evidence for lab analysis,» shared Senior Forensic Specialist of the Criminalistics Support Sector of Odesa District Police Department No. 1, Police Major Zhanna Novakovska.
After the theoretical part, the students moved on to practical exercises. They donned protective suits, gloves, and shoe covers to avoid leaving their own traces, and attempted to «collect evidence» themselves. The children examined objects with magnifying glasses, took fingerprints from each other, worked with powders, and even modeled their own crime scene by inventing a «crime scenario».
The police assisted and explained each step — how to properly photograph findings, how to document information in a protocol, and why it’s important to maintain the integrity of evidence.
This interactive event not only introduced teenagers to the work of forensic specialists but also highlighted the precision, analytical thinking, and responsibility required in this profession.
At the end of the meeting, law enforcement invited high school students to consider joining the police force in the future, particularly the forensic division. These specialists play a crucial role in uncovering the truth, apprehending criminals, and restoring justice, making forensic work indispensable in any investigation.
