Commemoration: Discussion on Babi Yar in Odesa
At the genocide museum 'Territory of Memory' in Odesa, a panel discussion titled 'Babi Yar - A Tragedy of World War II' took place with the support of the local educational center.
The event, aimed at social studies teachers, focused on important issues related to teaching about the Holocaust and preserving historical memory in our city.
The discussion began with a video message from the director of the National Historical and Cultural Reserve 'Babi Yar', Roza Tapanova (Kyiv), who emphasized the significance of understanding the Babi Yar tragedy for modern Ukraine.
Philosophy PhD and honored cultural figure of Ukraine, Pavlo Kozlenko, head of the Odesa Holocaust Research Center, pointed out the pivotal role of social studies teachers in shaping historical consciousness among youth and combating intolerance.
The discussion focused on practical aspects of working with sensitive historical topics in the school environment. Participants were introduced to successful examples from Odesa educators in implementing museum pedagogy and educational activities.
Best practices for working with children on preserving the memory of World War II victims and the Holocaust were presented by teachers from Odesa Lyceums No. 56, 62, and the Law Lyceum.
Participants actively exchanged experiences, shared challenges they face in their work, and received valuable practical advice on integrating Holocaust themes into the educational process during wartime conditions.
