Exhibition Opening in Memory of Matthieu Chazal

The gallery «#ARTODESSA» at the Summer Theatre of the City Garden invites you to the grand opening of an exhibition dedicated to the memory of Matthieu Chazal (1975–2024), a French photographer who dedicated his life to finding beauty at the crossroads of cultures.

Matthieu first arrived in Odessa in 2011 and returned several times after the onset of war. His love for the city inspired us to dream of establishing a photography house in Odessa. Although Matthieu is no longer with us, our shared dream continues to thrive.

Matthieu Chazal (1975 – 2024) was a photographer and award winner who documented life along the divide between East and West. A true lover of life, he traveled around the Black and Mediterranean Seas, discovering beauty amidst the horrors of conflict. Despite not identifying as a war photographer, his works offer a remarkable chronicle of some of the most horrific conflicts of our time. His images reflect philosophical musings on humanity, showcasing how life persists even in the toughest circumstances: soldiers drinking tea, people celebrating in markets and wedding halls. War is hinted at through details, leaving space for life’s moments that become even more precious due to their fragility.

We invite you to the grand opening on April 22 at 5:00 PM!

The opening will feature Levantine music performed by Dmytro Zemskyi – it will be joyful, just as Matthieu would have loved.
