Competition for the Lesya Ukrainka Monument in Odesa

In August 2025, the Executive Committee of the Odesa City Council made a decision to hold a competition for the best project proposal for a monument to the renowned writer Lesya Ukrainka, along with the improvement of the surrounding area.

The Department of Architecture and Urban Planning of the Odesa City Council was appointed as the organizer of the competition.

The aim of the competition is to identify the best project proposal for a monument to Lesya Ukrainka and to develop an architectural solution for the enhancement of the adjacent park area.

The competition was held in one round until January 30, 2026. Professional architects, sculptors, designers, and students from architectural and construction universities, as well as project organizations, were invited to participate. Teams could also include specialists from other fields with experience in creating monumental art.

Currently, the Department of Architecture and Urban Planning of the Odesa City Council has summarized the results of the competition, which received 12 project proposals.

The jury recommends the work that took first place for the development of project and cost documentation and further realization.

First place was awarded to the project proposal under the motto No. 201953 (authors: sculptor Mykola Bylyk, architects Andriy Korstruba, Maria Matushenko, Oleksandr Vovk).

Second place went to the project proposal under motto No. 704020 (authors: sculptors Viktor Lipovka, Oleksandra Ruban, architects Andriy Danilenko, Kateryna Lipovka).

The third place was taken by the work under the motto No. 250271 (authors: sculptor Anastasia Kozminska, architects Mykola Chepelev, Mykola Volkov).

According to the conditions and program of the competition, monetary awards will be given to the author teams.

According to the decision of the Odesa City Council regarding the erection of a local significance monument to Lesya Ukrainka in Odesa, the location for the monument will be in the park at the corner of Fontanska Road and Lesya Ukrainka Avenue (formerly Gagarin Avenue).
