Protecting Children Online: New Initiatives in Ukraine

According to a Google study (February 2025), Ukrainian children begin using the internet as early as five years old, spending an average of one hour per day online. For teenagers, this number significantly exceeds three hours daily, necessitating special attention to their safety.

To combat cyberbullying, fraud, and unwanted content, the 'Safer Internet Center' has been established in Ukraine. This initiative is implemented by NGOs 'Magnolia', 'La Strada-Ukraine', and 'Docudays'.

The Center operates in three main directions:

Hotline StopCrime

This hotline accepts reports of online sexual violence against children, facilitating blocking and investigation of such materials while collaborating with the international network INHOPE. The StopCrime project was created with the support of the Ministry of Digital Transformation of Ukraine, Diia.Education, and the Cyberpolice Department to combat online violence against children.

Support Line for Children and Youth 116111

This national hotline provides psychological and legal assistance to children who have become victims of online violence or encountered other internet threats.

Awareness Campaigns

The Center conducts information campaigns aimed at children, parents, educators, law enforcement, and anyone wishing to learn more about digital hygiene.

Safer Internet Centers are common practice in EU countries and are supported by the Insafe network. The Ministry of Digital Transformation collaborates with European partners to create a safe space for children in the digital realm and to protect the rights of citizens online.
