New Initiative for Weight Management in Odesa
The Department of Health of Odesa City Council has initiated a groundbreaking project called «Odesa Monitors Healthy Weight».
The aim of this project is to reduce obesity rates among adults and children, prevent related health issues, and enhance the quality and longevity of life for Odesa residents.
«Addressing excess weight is a strategic priority that has been recognized globally. Less than half of Ukrainians maintain a healthy weight, while the majority are overweight. Managing weight and adopting a conscious approach to nutrition and lifestyle is crucial for health and longevity,» stated Levon Nikogosyan, the director of the city’s Department of Health.
The project plans to train over 350 family doctors, pediatricians, and primary care nurses on obesity management and prevention.
Leading specialists from the Department of Family Medicine at Odesa National Medical University and the Odesa Regional Family Medicine Association will conduct the training.
The curriculum will cover a wide range of topics, including how to consult both adult patients and children, proper nutrition, feeding children, and ensuring control over eating habits, physical activity, and sleep patterns. Screening for excess weight and obesity-related diseases will also be implemented.
The first session of the project began on March 4, 2025, at the Primary Health Care Center No. 4. The initial group of 15 doctors and 15 family nurses will complete a two-day training course on obesity and motivational interviewing with patients.
«Obesity is not just an aesthetic issue; it is a chronic disease that can be insidious. Many people may feel fine for years, but gradually, conditions like high blood pressure, fatty liver disease, and even Type 2 diabetes can develop without their knowledge, leading to severe complications such as heart attacks and strokes,» emphasized Valentina Velychko, director of the Children’s Consultative Diagnostic Center named after Academician B.Ya. Reznik.
Doctors offer simple advice to help maintain a healthy life:
1. When thirsty, drink plain water. Avoid sugary drinks between meals and opt for water instead.
2. Aim to include at least half a kilogram of fruits and vegetables in your diet each day as they are hydrating and high in fiber, keeping you full for longer.
3. Dedicate one hour each day to increase physical activity, such as brisk walking or exercising.
